The Duchess of Bedford, Anna Russell, invented the renowned afternoon tea tradition. Married to Francis Russell, the 7th Duke of Bedford, the Duchess made many trips to our area of Bloomsbury; socialising in the elegant houses and garden squares. She strolled by our Bedford Hotel many times and likely visited, as she was in fact the landlady. The Duke and Duchess of Bedford allowed Henry Thomas Walduck Jnr., one of the earlier generation owners of Imperial London Hotels, to run the only hotel on their Bloomsbury estate.
Traditional Afternoon Tea was born in Bloomsbury, central London. Nearly 200 years ago.

The Duchess of Bedford, Anna Russell, felt like she needed something to curb her hunger in the afternoons before dinner later on. She started to invite friends over for biscuits, little cakes and small finger sandwiches. Follow in Anna's footsteps and indulge in afternoon tea at Bedford Hotel. The Duchess was the landlady of the original Bedford Hotel and knew the Walduck family, who owned the property and still run Imperial London Hotels, based in Bloomsbury, today.
Follow in the Duchess of Bedford's footsteps, who invented afternoon tea circa. 1840. Our family hotel group, Imperial London Hotels, which began in 1837, had a close connection with the Duchess of Bedford. Her husband, the Duke, allowed Bedford Hotel to be the only hotel on their family estate. Today you can visit Bedford Hotel and have an Afternoon Tea experience fit for royalty, in Bloomsbury, the heart of London.
