Rudy Loewe: Intimacies of Care
At Wellcome Collection, Rudy Loewe: ‘Intimacies of Care – Spaces of Grief and Possibility’ reimagines a mental healthcare system that is equitable and supportive. The works ask us to consider more hopeful, empathetic, alternative approaches to care.
Audrey Amiss: The Surviving Exhibitions
‘Audrey Amiss: The Surviving Exhibitions’ is the first museum exhibition dedicated to artist Audrey Amiss (1933–2013). Bringing together drawings, paintings and other exhibition materials, it explores Amiss’s life as both an artist and campaigner, revealing how she used her work to speak out against harmful treatment within the mental health system. Born in Sunderland, Amiss won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Arts in the 1950s, where she studied painting until a mental health crisis and subsequent psychiatric treatment prevented her from completing her final year. She continued to make, exhibit and sell art throughout her life – alongside a long career in the Civil Service – but the full breadth of her work only came into view after her death. Her extensive archive was donated to Wellcome Collection in 2014.
‘The Surviving Exhibitions’ focuses on works that records suggest Amiss exhibited or intended to make public.
The Bayeux Tapestry
For the first time since it was made nearly 1,000 years ago, the Bayeux Tapestry is returning to England.Following a historic agreement with France, the 70-metre-long tapestry, depicting events leading up to the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, will be loaned to the British Museum from September 2026 to July 2027.This monumental embroidery tells the dramatic story of a moment that changed England forever. No year in the country’s history is more famous than 1066. It was the last time England was successfully invaded, and it is the year from which the modern monarchy dates itself. And there is no other object that is as instantly recognisable, as studied in schools and as copied by artists as the Bayeux Tapestry.
One of the wonders of the medieval world, the Tapestry offers a vision of life in 11th-century England both before and after the Conquest, from castles, warfare and ships to clothing, food and furniture. Likely commissioned by a Norman patron and made by English embroiderers, using manuscript drawings from Canterbury, the Tapestry is both a precious historical record and a remarkable work of art.
Korea Exhibition At British Museum
Featuring outstanding examples of sculpture, painting and decorative arts over two millennia – up to the present day – the exhibition presents the most comprehensive chronological survey of Korean visual and material culture seen in Europe for over 40 years.
This major exhibition draws almost exclusively from the 23,000 works bequeathed in 2021 by the late Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-Hee to the National Museum of Korea (NMK) and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA). It offers a dynamic journey through the art and material culture of the last 2,000 years.
Visionary Landscapes
Visionary Landscapes is a new exhibition at Swedenborg House exploring the relationship between landscape, imagination and vision. Curated by Museum Director Stephen McNeilly, the exhibition brings together historic works in dialogue with contemporary paintings, photography and film.
Organised, in part, to showcase the recent acquisition of works by William Blake and Francis Oliver Finch into the Swedenborg Collection, the exhibition draws together key works from a broad range of contemporary and historical artists.
